Britain: Two dead from separate carnival attacks in Notting Hill

British police today announced the death of two people in attacks taken during the famous carnival in Notting Hill in London, one of the largest in the world, held last weekend. The two victims – a mother who went to the carnival with her little daughter and a chef visiting the United Kingdom – were being treated for a little less than a week. Sir Maximen, 32, was stabbed at noon Sunday, as she tried to stop a fight. She succumbed to her injuries this morning Saturday, police announced. On Wednesday a 20-year-old was taken to court on charges of attempted homicide, a charge to be reviewed after the victim’s death. Musey Imnetou, a 41-year-old chef from Dubai visiting the United Kingdom and working for famous chef Gordon Ramsey and Alain Dukas, died Friday night. The 41-year-old had been found unconscious on Monday night, following a head injury in front of a restaurant where many carnival participants were found. A 31-year-old was charged yesterday Friday as a suspect in his injury and his case will also be reviewed after Imnetu’s death, police announced. The event organizers expressed their “shock”, as did London mayor Sadiq Khan, who denounced a “treason in carnival values”. Like every year, nearly a million people flocked to the streets of this district to the west of the British capital for two days for this famous carnival honoring Caribbean culture for more than 50 years.

Carnival is considered the largest in Europe and the second in the world behind that of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. A total of eight people were stabbed – three on Sunday and five on Monday – despite placing metal detectors at the entrances of certain roads.

At the same time hundreds of people were arrested during the carnival. While gun possession is under strict regulations in the United Kingdom, the country strives to regulate gun possession with blades, especially among teenagers. Many knife attacks have occurred in the United Kingdom in recent weeks, with police stating that they have not identified terrorist motives in any of them.
