France: Infant drowned in wreckage of immigrants in the Channel – 65 rescued

A dead child was recovered who drowned last Thursday night in the English Channel, off the coast of France, when an over-laden ship was over-laden on board immigrants trying to reach Britain was announced today by the French authorities. This death brings at least 52 people who have lost their lives so far this year trying to reach Britain through the Channel. It is a record number since early 2018 when these crossings with improvised boats began. Among the victims of these shipwrecks are often children. On September 3, half of the twelve victims of the worst wreck of this year were minors. On October 5, a two-year-old child was killed when she was trampled on a boat carrying 90 people and who suffered damage. The conditions of the Channel crossing “one of the busiest migration routes worldwide”, according to the French port, are particularly dangerous.

As of 1 January the boats reached the British authorities had an average of 53 passengers each, against 13 in 2020, according to official British data.

Since the beginning of the year more than 26,000 migrants have arrived in Britain through the Channel.
