The cost of King Charles’ coronation revealed

The coronation ceremony of King Charles and Queen Camilla last year cost £72 million and highlighted Britain to millions of people around the world, today refers to a government exhibition, with the event costing less than half as compared to Queen Elizabeth’s funeral. The enthronement of Charles and Camilla took place on May 6, 2023. It was the largest ceremonial event in Britain in the last 70 years, held with grandeur before 100 leaders of the international community and attended by television receivers millions of people. In his annual report, the Culture Office (DCMS), which had undertaken the organization of the events, announced that Charles’ coronation cost the sum of £50.3 million in order to set up, with an additional £21.7 million spent on policing.

This amount is compared to the estimated GBP 162 million spent on Queen Elizabeth’s funeral and related events in 2022. Charles’ enthronement was smaller than those of his predecessors, among other things his mother, in order to reflect a more modern era and recognize that it takes place at a time economically difficult for many people. At that time, critics argued it was wrong to spend large sums when citizens are faced with the crisis of living costs, but Buckingham Palace and organizers pointed out that it would provide financial impetus to Britain. DCMS notes that it was “a unique moment, which was the reason for the whole country to unite in the celebrations and offered a unique opportunity for celebration and strengthening our national identity while airing the United Kingdom in the world.” As noted in the announcement, the event produced more than 100,000 reports with the worldwide audience attending it amounting to around 2 billion people in 125 countries.
