Speed Bad weather sweeps Britain – One dead
Destructive is the passage of the Darragh storm in Britain. A man has lost his life and tens of thousands of homes are without electricity. The storm has caused considerable disturbance in South Wales, western England and Northern Ireland, with many rail lines and flights being cancelled. A man around 40 was killed when a tree fell on his truck, writes BBC. Winds of 80-90 miles/h have been recorded around the Irish Sea during the storm. At least 48,000 homes were left without power in Wales, while North Ireland Electricity Networks reported power outages affect more than 46,000 facilities.
A rare “red” warning from Met Office about potentially life-threatening weather conditions in western and southern Wales and the Bristol Channel coast was in effect from 03:00 to 11:00 local time.
About three million people received government emergency alerts on their cell phones on Friday night, giving advice on the storm.
The notice stated that citizens should “consider collecting lenses, batteries, cell phone power and other key items”, in case of power outage.
Friday’s message was the most massive use of the UK warning system and made a loud sound like a siren when it was broadcast by the devices, which lasted about 10 seconds.
